Won The World Title
The first time was on December 8, 1984, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he effectively knocked out Wilfredo Gómez in 11 rounds and won the World Boxing Council featherweight title. He won the WBC super featherweight title on February 29, 1988, in Inglewood, California, defeating Mexican Mario Azabache Martínez by majority decision. His third belt was obtained on October 13, 1990, in Sydney, Australia, by defeating Puerto Rican Juan LaPorte by unanimous decision and he kept the WBC super featherweight belt. He recovered that same championship on December 1, 1995, in Indio, California, defeating the Mexican Gabriel Ruelas by technical knockout in five rounds.s.

Lost His Title
He did not lose it, he made six defenses and then he resigned to go in search of the super featherweight title. He lost the super featherweight title on May 19, 1990, in Las Vegas, in a unification fight with Pernell Whitaker, IBF super featherweight champion, who defeated him by unanimous decision. In his third stage as champion, he lost the title in his sixth defense on May 7, 1994, in Las Vegas, Jesse James Leija defeated him by unanimous decision. In his fourth stage as champion, Genaro Chicanito Hernández defeated him by decision in Corpus Christi, Texas, on March 22, 1997 and took the WBC super featherweight belt from him.MB

On June 24, 2008, in Melbourne, Australia, Jeff Fenech defeated him by a ten-round majority decision.
