In his second defense, on April 7, 1963, he won the WBC title by defeating Douglas Vaillant by technical knockout in 13 rounds, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He regained his WBA and WBC lightweight titles on November 13, 1965, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, by defeating Panamanian Ismael Laguna by decision.

Lost His Title
In his fifth defense he lost the WBA and WBC lightweight titles on April 10, 1965 in Panama, as Ismael Laguna beat him by points in 15 rounds. In his sixth defense, in his second stage as monarch, on June 29, 1968 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Carlos “'Teo” Cruz defeated him by decision
