In his first defense on March 1, 1978, in Bangkok, Thailand, he was outpointed by the local Netrnoi Sor. In his second stage as champion, he lost the belt again in his first defense against Eleoncio Mercedes, by points, at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles, California.
