Won The World Title
On June 19, 1999, in Miami, Florida, he defeated Antonio Hernández by unanimous decision and won the WBA super featherweight title. On October 7, 2006, in Las Vegas, he defeated Diego Corrales by majority decision and became the WBC lightweight champion. And on March 22, 2008, in Cabezón, California, he technically knocked out Michael Katsidis in ten rounds and won the interim WBO lightweight title.

Lost His Title
In his seventh defense, on January 12, 2002, in Las Vegas, he unified with the Brazilian champion of the WBO, Acelino Freitas and fell by unanimous decision. After defending the WBC lightweight title for the first time on September 10, 2007 against José Armando Santa Cruz, whom he defeated by majority decision, at Madison Square Garden, New York, he resigned. He never defended his interim WBO lightweight title and was unknown as a monarch.

Withdrawal
On November 12, 2011, in Vegas, Timothy Bradley Jr. technically knocked him out in eight rounds, when he disputed the WBO super lightweight title.
