On February 25, 1986, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, he won a four-round majority decision over Job Walters.

Won The World Title
On April 29, 1989, at the"Roberto Clemente"Coliseum in Puerto Rico, he defeated his compatriot Juan Laporte by unanimous decision in 12 rounds and seized the vacant WBO super featherweight title. On October 7, 1989, in Sacramento, California, he defeated Tony López by technical knockout in ten rounds and captured the IBF super featherweight belt. On February 22, 1992, in South Africa, he technically knocked out Jackie Gunguluza in four rounds and regained the IBF super featherweight belt.

Lost His Title
In his second defense, Tony López defeated him by majority decision and snatched the IBF super featherweight belt from him. After seven successful defenses of the IBF super light title (in his second stint as champion), he resigned to go for the WBO lightweight title against Óscar de la Hoya and lost a unanimous decision in 1995.

Withdrawal
The Mexican Juan Lazcano knocked him out in 11 rounds, in El Paso, Texas and announced his retirement.
