On June 9, 1978, in Las Vegas, he prevailed by majority decision over Ken Norton and obtained the WBC title. On November 9, 1984, in Las Vegas, he defeated James Smith by TKO in 12 rounds to win the IBF title.

Lost His Title
He defended the WBC championship 16 times and resigned to go in search of the IBF scepter. On September 21, 1985, in Las Vegas, Michael Spinks defeated him by unanimous decision in 15 rounds and snatched the IBF title.

Withdrawal
On July 27, 2002, in Norfolk, Virginia, he defeated Eric Esch by unanimous decision.

The Data
Larry Holmes went and returned to boxing, with the desire to become world champion again, but the three times he tried he was unsuccessful, he was defeated by Mike Tyson in 1988, by technical knockout in 4; Evander Holyfield in 1992 (unanimous decision) and Oliver McCall in 1995 (unanimous decision). He retired at 52 years of age. Holmes was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in June 2008.
