He was crowned for the third time on April 24, 1998, in San José, California, by beating Héctor Lizárraga on points to win the IBF featherweight belt. He ascended the throne for the fourth time on November 16, 2001, in Las Vegas, by knocking out Frank Toledo in five rounds and regained the IBF featherweight title. His fifth and last title was won on July 12, 2003, in Glasgow, Scotland, by beating local Scott Harrison on points and taking the WBO featherweight title.MB

The first time in his fifth defense, on February 26, 1993 in France, Tom Johnson beat him on points. In the second, on December 11, 1995 in Japan, Luisito Espinosa beat him on points. He lost the sash for the third time on November 13, 1999 to Paul Ingle, who defeated him by decision. Johnny Vive la vida Tapia dethroned him in his fourth stage as monarch, when he was going for his second defense, on April 27, 2004, by defeating him by majority decision in New York.
