On May 22, 1993, in Washington, he defeated Bernard Hopkins by unanimous decision to win the vacant IBF middleweight title. On August 7, 1997, in Connecticut, he won the WBC light heavyweight title by knocking out Montell Griffin in one round. In his first defense, he unified his title with Lou Del Valle, the WBA light heavyweight champion, and defeated him by unanimous decision on July 18, 1998 in New York. On January 15, 2000, he was also crowned IBF light heavyweight champion, beating David Telesco by unanimous decision in 12 rounds, in New York. On December 21, 2013, in Moscow, he defeated Zine Eddine Benmakhlouf by unanimous decision to win the World Boxing Union cruiserweight title.

Lost His Title
After seven IBF middleweight title defenses, he relinquished the title to pursue the WBC light heavyweight title. On May 15, 2004, in Las Vegas, in his number one defense of the WBC and WBA, as well as other"ghost"organizations, Antonio Tarver knocked him out in two rounds.
