On March 1, 1997, in Paris, France, he defeated Jean-Baptiste Mendy by unanimous 12-round decision to seize the WBC lightweight title. He recovered the WBC lightweight title on February 27, 1997, in Miami, by defeating Mexican César Bazán by majority decision.

Lost His Title
On June 13, 1998, in El Paso, Texas, Mexican César Bazán defeated him by majority decision and stripped him of the WBC lightweight title. In his second spell as WBC lightweight champion he lost the crown in his fifth defense on June 17, 2000, in Gardens, California, Mexican José Luis Castillo defeated him by majority decision.

Withdrawal
On May 21, 2008, in North Carolina, he was knocked out in ten rounds by Edner Cherry.
